Peer Review

Peer Review

In this guide, you'll learn how to use the peer review method from the book Feedback That Moves Writers Forward to learn creative writing. You'll learn how to give and receive feedback that moves you forward as a writer.

📚 Understand the concept of peer review

Peer review is a feedback method where you have your writing reviewed by peers and vice versa. The point is not to find mistakes, but to provide constructive feedback that helps the writer improve. Read the chapter on peer review in Feedback That Moves Writers Forward to get a deeper understanding.

✍️ Write a first draft

Before you can peer review, of course, you need a text. Write a first draft on a topic of your choice. Try to focus on the creative process rather than being perfect. Remember that the goal of the peer review is to improve you, not to criticize you.

👥 Find a peer review partner.

Find a partner who is also interested in creative writing. This can be a friend, a colleague, or a member of a writing group. You should both be willing to give and receive honest and constructive feedback.

🔄 Exchange your texts

Now it's time to exchange your texts. Give your partner your draft and take his. Both of you take enough time to read each other's text thoroughly.

📝 Give feedback

After reading your partner's text, write down your feedback. Try to identify both positive aspects and areas for improvement. Be as specific as possible. Instead of saying "The characters could be better", you could write "The character of Anna could have more depth if you told more about her past".

💬 Discuss feedback

Meet (virtually or in person) and discuss the feedback. Be open to each other's opinions and don't take criticism personally. Remember that the goal of peer review is to help each other become better writers.

🔄 Repeat the process

After discussing the feedback, revise your texts accordingly. Then, exchange texts again and repeat the process. With each round of peer review, you will notice that your writing skills improve.
